Weekend Of Horns
Last weekend I was invited to a friends house in Georgia to listen to some creations and a selection of horns. It was a blast. This was one of two constants for the weekend bridged McIntosh 275 amps McIntosh 250 amps and QSC for the subs. The preamp is a Juicy Music Merlin and crossover an Ashley. There were a few Ashley's on hand. The source was a computer based and very good. I can't remember the sound cards that were used but I couldn't tell the difference between that and a cd player.
This was my favorite system of the weekend. The HF section is from the Klipsch MCM grand featuring K402 and K510. The mid low horns are modified tractrix with stock drivers which need no eq in this setup. The mid lo horn is a large tractrix design with dual 12 inch drivers. The sub is a Bill Fitzmaurice Titan. The sub integrated well which is hard to do with horns or at least I have had a hard time with it in the past.
Then the bass went abit insane with a pair of these Klipsch KPT684s. Four 18 inch drivers in one room makes for some air moving and real persuasive percusion.
This is the large tractrix horn JC designed and built. The build quality is superb. It sounds great. I believe we used it from 90hz to around 400hz-600hz depending on HF section.
I brought along my K403 with B&C DE82TN drivers. This horn was the last horn Paul Klipsch designed with Roy Delgado. The design is modified tractrix. The 403 was supposed to be part of the Klipsch Jubilee but the system never saw production. This horn is very rare and thank you M.H. for selling it to me. I wasn't sure how well it would integrate with this system but it did very well.
Greg Roberts sent along this incredibly packed hf and mf horn system. The packaging is superb. It is easy to mate with heritage Klipsch. It included a biradial tweeter with beyma driver. The coverage of the biradial horn is superb. The mid is a tractrix horn. I believe JC had a hand in the tractrix horn. This combo is really good.
I've become a fan of the B&C drivers. Not sure they can be beat for the money. Next on my list to hear is the B&C DCX50.
The next horn we tried was the BMS 4592. This is not the coax version. It is very nice. BMS makes excellent drivers. I'd like to spend more time with them.
This was very nice. The coverage of the tweeter was surprising. We had a measuring rig running all weekend so we could move the mike and see the response. I thought that mounting the tweeter on top in the center would have been best but the coverage was so good why bother.
One of the last systems we listened to was the Klipsch K402 with coax BMS 4592. This was the most time I've spent with a coax compression driver but I think I like them.
After listening to all these systems I asked if we could return to the first system of the weekend. It was really the best so open and clean with a tad of bass.
