Phillips 1KW EL6471 Amplifier Of Unusual Size

Here we have a 1955 Phillips EL6471 packing a wapping1KW. Why would one need that much power? A stadium of electrostatics? Power the most inefficient speakers ever? While hugely impractical I can't stop looking at them.. Phillips doesn't mess around and this is a serious beastie. Check it out.
 Output tubes are a pair of Phillips QB3,5/750 per channel.
 Looks like three phase. 
Safer with the cover on but much better off.
