UK Soundway Records Releases Lost African Music

My new favorite label for buying vinyl is Soundway Records. They are releasing very important music from Africa. The music is amazing and rivals anything else going on in the 70's. If you like highlife, afrobeat, funk, disco, Nigerian blues or African Jazz you have to check out this label. This music is amazing.

I never tire of this music. It is just one groove after another. This weekend I had a grillout party where I was spinning these Soundway Records. The music infectious everyone was asking about this music and dancing around. You just can't keep still while this music is on.

You can listen to a few samples here

Retro Hi-Fi Girl Friday

It seems she has a thing for Les Baxter but hell who doesn't. If you don't you should.

Klangfilm Eurodyn Ginormous Theatre Horn

The European theatre horn masters built ginormous systems. I would love to hear these. Some of their systems are versions of RCA or Western Electric designs but then others are completely their own including this one the Eurodyn. The last pic shows the scale. If only I could fit something like this in my house. Genius.

Speakers Of Unusual Size

I seem to have a fascination with huge speakers. These Mitsubishi Diatone speakers are interesting. I researched them but didn't find much but regular 70's direct driver speakers. Check out the wheels on these suckers.

Early Stephens Giganticon Speaker System

Ok that isn't the name of this speaker but it could be.

Stephens was a real powerhouse in the early days of audio. Their drivers were superb. I've heard the blue trusonic 15" driver and it is wonderful. If you have a chance give them a listen.

Can't remember where these pictures come from but this is no wimpy speaker system. If anyone knows the proper name for it please let me know.

Could you imagine wall mounting these beasties. Good grief.

Retro Hi-Fi Girl Friday

One of the few times I get emails is when I skip Retro Hi-Fi Girl Friday so by popular demand here you are. When I find out how to post more risque pictures without getting the blog shot down have I ever got something for you.

1926 Western Electric Turntable 2A

I have been looking for good pics of this turntable for ages. This is the first 33 1/3 turntable used for radio and movies. An amazing museum quality piece.

This appears to be an early WE TT in action.

The Microscopy of Vinyl Recordings

Ever since I scored the Garrard 301 I have become a vinyl junkie. Doing some reading at the vinyl engine I found this link to microoscopy of vinyl recordings.

I find this fascinating. All that beautiful music comes from these grooves.

The site also has some great detailed pics of stylus.

This is a great five page article.
