Captain Beefheart And Magic Band

I've always had a hard time with rock music. What I should like and respect I don't but I do love Zappa but more than Zappa I love Beefheart and his Magic Band.

This selection goes out to my friend Terry aka IBSlammin.

    1. The Magic Band did a near instrumental album called Grow Fins... Pretty amazing.

  2. I saw them perform in 1971 and they did Lick My Decals Off, Baby in its entirety. Completely mind blowing. Opening act was Ry Cooder!

    2. I saw them on that tour too: in Pasadena with Ry & Little Feat opening for them. TWO drummers! I've never been the same since!

  4. What amazed me about hearing them live was just TIGHT they were as band, at a time when live performances were very, umm,'casual'.

    1. You got that right. Every player in that group was a monster, they just nailed all those crazy modulations and fractured melodies. You're also right about other groups from that era being "less than precise" in their execution.

    2. The BBC Beefheart documentary is highly recommended. They were basically in a musical cult. The story of the making of Trout Mask Replica is pretty nuts. I dig it.

Very jealous of you guys that got to see them in their prime.

  5. There is a nice clip of the band on one of the "old Grey Whistle Test" episodes too.
