The Witch Doctor In Your Living Room - HiFi Stereo 1960 Exotica

This is a really good article on Exotica music of the time. Exotica music was very easy to collect since most of the other guys were collecting rock blues or jazz. The good thing was that these records were generally in great shape since they were owned by older people who took care of their records. Generally bought for the beautiful covers you need to be careful or you will become hooked on Arthur Lyman's vibes.  If you have a stack of exotica that you bought for the covers that you haven't listened to yet just mix up some tiki drinks set back relax and let em spin.

Klipschorn Jubilee

I edited this from the photo Klipsch released years ago for the CES show. PWK with his last speaker design the Klipschorn Jubilee. It took about 50 years but PWK and Roy Delgado finally bested the Khorn.

The criteria for his new speaker was:
Smoother response in the passband.
Distortion lower than the Khorn.
Decrease in second and third harmonic distortion
Extended LF response past 600hz and it hits about 1500hz.
Bass response lower than the Khorn.
All design goals met.

The 403 Horn by PWK and Roy Delgado

I don't often post on my own equipment. This is mostly because my system is modest by comparison to most of my friends systems. I'll start with one item that is worth sharing which is the 403. This horn was to be the consumer horn for PWK's Jubilee system designed with Roy Delgado. Roy and PWK both had their preferences for horn design. This horn is a combination of their design criteria. From what I have been able to put together Roy uses his trademark modified Tractrix curve and PWK insist on a 1.4 inch throat and collapsing verticals. This creates a great sounding horn with little or no need for eq.. I don't eq this one from 600hz to 18khz.
 28 inches wide
10 inches high
11 inches deep
The 403 horn is a prototype that never went into full production.
Would I love to have it made out of wood? YES!
Wood was to be the material it was made of but hey it is a miracle I have these horns anyway.

This wooden one was made in Italy but they mistook the bumps in the horn for a mistake instead of an intentional transition point in the horn. I can only imagine how mad PWK and Roy were when this showed up at Klipsch labs after shelling out thousands of dollars.

There may be better drivers than the BC DE82 but that is the driver PWK picked out for this horn and for that reason it stays. The only thing I would change would be to roll off the high end a little just before it breaks up on the high end.. I haven't bothered because that is where my hearing drops as well.

This curve is not smoothed just a ballpark one I made of the 403.
The Jubilee LF and 403 HF were the last horns PWK was involved with at Klipsch and what a way to go out. Horn building and designing to the end.
Thank you Roy and PWK.

Hi-Fi Microscope Fun

I saved a microscope from being trashed this week. Only two of the four lenses is working but I did get to check out my cartridge stylus. I actually took these pics by putting the iPhone camera up to the microscope. Decent pics considering.

There was a fair bit of gunk which I removed quickly. The first is a Denon DL110.
 Much cleaner now.
It took much work just to get these pics but it was fun.
There are of my Ortofon 2M Blue. There was actually a hair stuck to the stylus it took much effort to get it removed.
Still some gunk. I suppose now I'll have to research stylus cleaners now.

What is that?
How did it get here?
File under music system tweeks.

Sherwood Vintage Adverts

Until recently Sherwood was a sleeper and undervalued tube gear. Thanks to some crazy bastards over at audio asylum talking them up the prices have been on the rise. I've always like the way they looked. The front panels have their own style.

Mid Century Modern Entertainment Center

This is amazing Lowther, Fisher and Ampex all wrapped up into an amazing console.
Furniture should still be made like this.

I wish more pride was taken in STEREO recordings like they did in the 50's.
